Sapporo, Japan – Janine Becky scored two goals as Canada beat Chile 2-1 in the group stage of the women’s Olympic football competition on Saturday.
Becky hit the post with a penalty attempt for Canada in the 21st minute, but she scored in the 39th with a cross from Nichelle Prince.
Becky added her second in the second half, before Karen Araya scored a goal in the 57th to put Chile 2–1 behind. It was La Rosa’s first Olympic goal.
Canada opened the Olympics in Group E with a 1–1 draw against Japan. Christine Sinclair, the all-time leading international scorer among men and women, scored her 187th career goal in the sixth minute in her 300th appearance with the team.
La Rosa lost 2–0 to Britain in their first match. Chile, ranked 37th in the world, is making its Olympic debut.
