Diamondbacks complete Pirates sweep with 6-4 win

Pavin Smith and Doulton Varshaw hit consecutive homers to advance in the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks ended a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-4 win

PHOENIX – Pavin Smith and Doulton Varshaw scored consecutive homers in the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks ended a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-4 win on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks won their 30th game of the season—against an MLB-worst 68 defeat—and fourth in a row to match their season-best winning streak. They won four straight April 18–22, including three games in Cincinnati, their only previous sweep of the season.

With Game 4 tied, Smith greeted reliever Duane Underwood Jr. (2-3) with his ninth homer in the right-field seats. Varshaw followed with his second of the season, just clearing the inner fence to the right.

Varsho, playing in the middle ground on Tuesday night, also opened the fourth innings of two runs.

All-star Brian Reynolds produced three hits for Pirates.

Brett de Geus (2-0) ran John Ngowski to force into a tying run in seventh when the Pirates loaded bases on three singles against Joe Mantipelli. But de Geus retired Jacob Stallings in a double game to end the innings.

Joaquim Soria retired to the ninth-ranked side for his sixth defense for the Diamondbacks.

Madison Bumgarner made five appearances for Arizona in her second start since coming off the injury list (swelling of the left shoulder). He got one out, didn’t run and bowled 79 pitches. He conceded three runs including one earned.

Max Kranick, pitching on his 24th birthday, debuted for Pittsburgh earlier in the week after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. He played more than three innings conceding seven hits and four runs.

The Pirates, who were swept away for the 10th time this season, have lost four in a row. The streak began on Sunday, when they beat the New York Mets 6-0 after an innings only 7-6.

D-Bax Defense

Bumgarner benefited from a pair of plays at the start of the game. LF David Peralta jumped over the wall in the second innings to drive a potential home run away from Stallings. In third, 3B Eduardo Escobar made a diving stop on Nogovski’s smash and tossed him out to stop the scoring of a run.

clipped return

Before the game, the Diamondbacks reinstated RHP Tyler Clipard from the injured list for 60 days. The veteran reliever was out since spring training with a sprained right shoulder. He played the sixth inning, allowing Stalling a leadoff bunt single and ending it by dismissing Jared Oliva, retiring the next three.

To make the roster, Arizona substituted RHP JB Bukauskas for Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks also claimed a waiver of RHP Ty Tice from Atlanta and selected him for Reno, and named LHP Alex Young for the assignment. Young was selected for Reno on Monday.

PITTSBURGH: RHP Chase de Jong, who was placed on the injured list after starting Monday’s play, had an MRI of his left knee and the team is awaiting the results, said sports medicine director Todd Tomzik. … LHP Stephen Broult (left lat strain) continues his rehab work with Triple-A Indianapolis and will start another there, Tomsky said.

Arizona: 3B Asdrubal Cabrera (right hamstring strain) played in an Arizona League game on Tuesday. Lovulo said he would get “a lot of bats” in rehab before returning to the roster, just to make sure his leg is strong.

2B Josh Rojas has been batting .390 in his last 12 games for Arizona. He was 2 for 4 with a run scored, a double, a walk and a stolen base. He left after thwarting an unsuccessful attempt at theft in the eighth.
