Although the look seems understated, the page’s pop of green is a statement in itself as a symbol of strange love, originating from the poet Oscar Wilde, who often wore it on his own lapel.

The green carnation came to represent queer men because it was “the embodiment of decadence and the unnatural,” according to Oscar Wilde Tours. For Page, it was important to include such a tribute after years of separation between his public image and true identity.

“I just never recognized myself,” said Page Time About her prior appearances on the red carpet and magazine spread. “For a long time I couldn’t even see a picture of myself.”

And while people look to make decisions about what to wear best on the carpet, Page also shared his stance on the “crushing standards” to which he lived for so long.

“There are widespread stereotypes about masculinity and femininity that define how we should all act, dress and speak,” he told the publication. “And they serve no one.”

On the Met Gala stairs, Page looked contented and liberated.

“That smile says it all,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “She’s so happy to be herself!”
