Can’t sleep? Sales after the 4th of July are a great time to upgrade your snoozing status. There are many factors that go into getting a good night’s sleep: your mindset, your overall health, your sleep hygiene. While each one plays an important role in the soundness of your sleep, sometimes what stands (or lies) between you and a good night’s sleep is your mattress.
“A better mattress can totally help with sleep,” says Christopher Winter, MD, K. Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and the author of the book, Sleep Remedy: Why Your Sleep Breaks and How to Fix It, tells Yahoo Life.
There are a few specific signs that it’s time for a mattress upgrade, Winter says:
you move around a lot at night. “At times, the pain or discomfort moves you too far to try to relax,” says Winter. You might not even be aware that this is happening. Check the condition of your sheets in the morning—if they’re all in bunches or folded, it’s a good sign that you were throwing up and turning. Or, if you sleep with a partner, Winter recommends asking if they’ve seen you walking around at night.
You are upset in the morning. Winter says the wrong mattress can put pressure on your hips, shoulders, and knees, leading to stiffness and pain in the morning. “Soreness is a great way to find out if your mattress is supporting you correctly,” he says.
You are overheating at night. If you’re getting hot and sweaty at night, your mattress may be to blame. “Some mattresses that offer more support can sometimes make you feel warmer,” says Winter. “Bed sweating is a big deal that people often go through, but they shouldn’t.”
If trying different mattresses in the showroom doesn’t float your boat, Winter says you can still find a good option online.
He recommends making a list of what you need — more joint support, a softer feel, a cooler environment — and looking for options based on that. If you have a partner, Winter recommends sitting down with them and making a list of the factors that are important to each of you in a mattress. “If they’re widely separated, you probably want to look for a mattress that you can customize for each side,” he says.
Not sure what you need? Choose medium-firm option, say Harrison A. Linder, MD, pain management specialist with The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. “They are firm enough to offer support for back and front sleepers, but still offer some cushion for those who prefer to sleep on their side,” he says.
