WASHINGTON – Eric Fede returned after nearly a month on the COVID-19 injured list and played five quick innings, Kyle Schwarber hit a leadoff homer and the Washington Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-0 on Saturday DoubleHeader opened.

The Nationals lost their first of the season to Kevin Gossman (7–1). He started the day with a 1.27 ERA, but Schwarber quickly dented that impressive number.

Washington are now 1-5 in a seven-innings game this year as Thursday’s rain turned the day-night division a doubleheader. The NL West-leading Giants are 1-2 in a seven-innings game.

Fedde (4-4) last pitched on May 16 and was placed on the COVID-19 list three days later. He rejoined the rotation by limiting the Giants to four hits, with seven hitting none.

Brad Hand took a perfect seventh wicket to defend his 11th.

Schwarber hit his sixth career leadoff homer, connecting for a drive into the second deck in left field. A day after being shut down by San Francisco, Schwarber broke the scoreless string with his 10th home run this season, tying Tree Turner for the team lead.

Josh Harrison’s RBI doubled to 2-0 in the fourth. Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemsky turned in an attempt to take the catch, which resulted in the ball hitting the wall, allowing Juan Soto to score from first.

Gossman conceded two runs on three hits, scored four runs in four innings, and was out with a 43 ERA.

The Nationals won with four hits. The Giants had five hits and were out for the third time this season and the first since April 12.
