SEATTLE – Tyler Gilbert dropped two hits in another swift outing, Keitel Marte made a home and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Sunday.
Arizona further damaged the Mariners’ AL wild-card hopes with their second straight win, taking the series from a team that had been rising just two days earlier. Seattle is now three games behind Boston for a second wild-card spot, with the Red Sox coming to the city on Monday for a three-match series.
The Diamondbacks opened the game 1-1 with four consecutive hits on reliever Anthony Missiewicz (4-5) to open the sixth inning. Henry Ramos’ two-run double made it 3-1 and rookie Seth Beer ended the string of hits with an RBI single.
Gilbert (2-2) allowed two hits – a single home run by Mitch Hanniger in the fourth and Dylan Moore in the sixth – in 5 1/3 innings. The left-handed rookie, who started his career with a no-hitter last month, scored two runs in his sixth start.
Four relievers combined for 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief before JB Wendelken gave Louis Torrens an infield single and a two-run homer to Jared Kelenik on a nine-pitch at-bat. But he finished ninth with the first strikeout and putout to earn his first save.
The Mariners have reinstated LHP Tyler Anderson from the bereavement list. He is scheduled to make his regular debut on Tuesday when Seattle hosts Boston. The team selected INF Kevin Padlow at Triple-A Tacoma to make the roster.
Diamondbacks: RHP Zack Galen (2-9, 4.32) takes the mound Monday when Arizona travels to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is 1-2 with a 2.19 ERA in his last four, with 27 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings.
Mariners: RHP Logan Gilbert (5-5, 5.10) takes the mound with a chance to make the wild-card race against Boston on Monday. He has lost his last three decisions.
