it’s only been two months Jason Derulo On May 8, he became a father, welcoming son Jason King with girlfriend Jenna Froomes. Since then, the “Wiggle” singer has indulged in late nights and dirty diapers—the latter a messy experience teased for her in her new campaign. #HotwireHotelGoals challenge, in which Derulo will help decide which TikToker entry qualifies for a $50,000 luxury vacation.
Next, the new father sings to his son about his go-to and why he decided to be a junior.
How are you feeling? The neonatal stage can be quite intense.
It was really awesome. You hear about all the horrors, but they don’t tell you about all the good things. It’s a wonderful experience. I’ve been up every couple of hours most nights and Jenna has been an ultimate superhero. I am very lucky in that department. Sometimes I don’t know how she’s doing it, but she’s definitely the kingpin of this whole thing.
His name is Jason King. why king?
I thought I would always name my son Raja first, but I decided to name him after myself. She is actually the bearer of my surname because my sister has a girl and my brother has a little girl. … I thought it was cool for him to be a junior.
Are you a handsome dad?
i am handsome [laughs]. Jenna is definitely making the most of it. But yes, I have changed some diapers. If he needs anything, I will be his assistant. I’m like his cook.
You both probably need a getaway right now, but you’re really working on Hotwire’s TikTok challenge to give someone a great trip. What’s your own ideal getaway – is there a place you’re really excited to take your son when things open up?
One place I think is a getaway and really cool and still has things to do is Bali. that would be the place [where] I want to bring family and really want to relax and calm down. But yeah, the partnership with Hotwire is really exciting because it’s been a tough year for everyone, and we’re all connected together. So everyone wants to get out and do something fun. Have a vacation, be a vacation. This partnership is just at the right time to give someone the vacation of a lifetime: $50,000 travel, private jet, the location of your choice and all you have to do is tell us the reason why you need that getaway.
Speaking of TikTok, there are a lot of parenting influencers out there. Are you following someone for parenting advice?
nah [laughs]. If I am taking parenting advice from TikTok, I have a lot of problems, first of all. You have to wonder what you learn from TikTok, but I mean I am not going to raise my son here. But you know, it’s all been a learning experience. I remember leaving the hospital and I was like, “Hey, that’s it? No pamphlets? Nothing? It’s ours? What do we do?” [laughs] But once we realized that he’s not made of porcelain, it just got a lot easier.
Do you sing for him at all? Do you have a favorite lullaby?
Yes, I sing to him, usually like jazz hymns. I was actually thinking about making a whole kiddie project for him and then seeing if he liked it.
Lastly, what are you most looking forward to in the coming years in terms of having a son?
I look forward to seeing what his interests are. I look forward to seeing who he becomes. I mean, you as a parent can guide someone as much as you can, but they’re always going to be their own person. So I’m really excited to see the person that he becomes.
