Martinez, Renfro lift Red Sox 6-2 over Royals amid delay

BOSTON – JD Martinez and Hunter Renfro home, Martin Perez bowled two runs in the sixth inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Wednesday night in bad weather twice in a game.

The first pitch was pushed back 41 minutes and the umpires stopped play for 1 hour and 56 minutes in the middle of the sixth, but the teams managed to play nine innings.

Perez (6-4) conceded two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

“Martin was outstanding. He did an excellent job,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. ”Tough conditions at the end of his outing.”

He allowed a homer to move Salvador Pérez to second. Perez’s homer came on during a 4-for-4 night.

“It’s doing it in a big way. Hitting four is hard,” said Royal manager Mike Matheny of Perez’s game. “He gave us a good blow.”

Mike Minor (6-6) conceded five runs in seven hits in five innings.

Martinez gave homer a 3–1 lead in his 16th session in the third session. Renfro added a single shot in the eighth.

Xander Bogaerts and Marwin Gonzalez produced two hits each for Boston.

Royals right-hander Richard Lovelady was hit in seventh by Martinez’s line-drive returner and left the game. He played 1 2/3 perfect innings at the start of his season.

“Luckily, it missed all the ribs,” Matheny said. “The doctors have already checked him out and believe everything is thoroughly checked internally.”
