Mondesi, Minor beat Royals 7-3 over Pirates

Adalberto Mondesi hit a two-run homer before injuring his hamstring, Mike Minor scored six solid innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3

Kansas City, Mo. – Adalberto Mondesi hit a two-run homer before injuring his hamstring, Mike Minor scored six solid innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Monday night.

Mondesi twisted his left hamstring when he charged the roller in the slow eighth. He was picked up for a pinch-hitter in the bottom half of the inning.

“I didn’t like seeing him come out of the game right there,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny. “That was a really good play. There aren’t many shortstops in the league that can make that play. He had to be completely reprimanded for doing so.”

The Royals returned to .500 for the first time with 10 out of 16 wins as an 11-game losing streak saw them go down four games.

Minor (4-2) conceded two runs and five hits. He hit seven and left one.

“A quality start and a win, so it was good,” Minor said. “I think I made some mistakes like every game. But I didn’t drop too many hard-hitting balls. “

Chad Kuhl (0-2) suffered a loss in his return from the injured list. He conceded three runs and six hits in four innings.

“I thought the slider was cool,” said Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton. “As the game progressed, he got stronger. He was initially a bit inconsistent with his fastball, but calmed down and got the pitch limit.

Brian Reynolds home for Pittsburgh and scored two runs.

The Pirates got a run for the first time on an RBI groundout by Reynolds, led by Adam Frazier’s double.

Whit Merrifield opened the bottom half with a double and scored on a two-out single by Salvador Perez.

The Royals added two in the second. Edward Olivares hit a pitch and scored on Hunter Dozier’s double. Dossier then scored on a shift-beating single by Calvin Gutierrez. Kansas City loaded the bases but could not score any more.

“I feel good and swing great,” Dozier said of his recent production. “I think I’m in a very good place right now.”

The Pirates found Kevin Newman within one on a two-out single in the third by goaltender Jacob Stallings.

Mondesi drove 417 feet beyond the bullpen in right field to give the Royals a 5-2 lead in the sixth. It was the second home match of the year for Mondesi, who was playing his first home match this season.

“That ball was hammered,” said Matheny. “He wasn’t trying to do too much. He’s in a really good place. It gave us a little bit of room to breathe.”

Reynolds is tied for straight center field in the eighth from a long home run.

Royals got two runs in the bottom half. Gutierrez’s fielder picks Nicki Lopez and Michael A. Taylor’s double-score moved Gutierrez forward.
