Portuguese surfer Frederico Moris has announced he tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the sport’s Olympic debut in Japan
Morris, 29, released a statement on social media on Friday evening.
The Portuguese Olympic team said Morris would not travel to Tokyo as planned.
“I was very careful. I have been fully vaccinated for over a month, but I ended up contracting the virus,” Moraes said in a statement released through Portugal’s Olympic team. “I feel good And I will complete my isolation. I will follow every second of my team.”
The International Surfing Association had no immediate comment, but its deadline to register an alternative is Saturday at 3 p.m. Morris, considered the best European surfer at the Tokyo Games.
The duration of the eight-day shortboard surfing competition begins at Tsurigasaki Beach on Sunday.
