Stokes’ first career hit helps the Pirates eventually solve the Reds

Troy Stokes Jr. scored with his first two major league hits, JT Brubaker hit six strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2

PITTSBURGH – Troy Stokes Jr. scored with his first two major league hits, JT Brubaker played six strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates finally defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 7-2, on Tuesday night.

Two days after making his debut, Stokes hit an RBI single in the fourth inning. The right fielder also doubled in the eighth by one run.

Brubaker (3-2) allowed one run on five hits to win the first of four starts. He had four strikes and a walk.

The Pirates had lost eight straight games to the Reds, with a combined score of 44–9 this season. Pittsburgh has won three of its last 12.

NL batting leader Jessie Winker doubled and doubled for Cincinnati to raise his average to .374. His single shot in the third inning by Brooker made the score at 1.

Jeff Hoffman (2-3) scored four runs and two runs while giving up three runs and four hits in four innings. Hoffman remains undeterred in his final four matches and falls to 0-3 in three career starts against Pittsburgh.

Adam Frazier of Pirates gave two hit films, including a two-run homer in eighth place in Sean Doolittle. Frazier has a 12-game hitting streak, a career best matched.

The Pirates went 3–1 with a two-run fourth inning. Kevin Newman knocked for a run along the middle field wall from left and scored on Stokes’ single to left.

Phillip Evans hit a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Winker’s second double of the game in the eighth was Nick Senzel, who also delivered three hits, and got the Reds within 4-2.

Stokes bounced back in the bottom of the inning by pulling a double down the left-field line.


Reds left-handed reliever Amir Garrett began serving a five-game suspension.

Garrett was originally suspended by Major League Baseball for seven games for his role in a bench-clearing incident against the Chicago Cubs. The ban was reduced to five games on Tuesday following an agreement between the MLB and the players’ union.

“We’re going to miss him,” manager David Bell said. “At this point there is really no use living on it. We will try to hire him. “

Garrett can participate in pregame workouts but must be out of uniform when the game begins.

Pirates: RF Gregory Polanco was activated from the injured list after missing a week following a violation of the MLB’s health and safety protocol. The three-match series ended on Wednesday with the Reds RHP Sunny Gray (0-2, 3.92 ERA) looking for their first win of the season. He pitched seven scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox in his final start. The Pirates would go with RHP Trevor Cahill (1-4, 6.75).
