Tanzania receives first batch of 1 million Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines donated by US government
Tanzania was one of the few countries in Africa that had not yet received vaccines or started vaccinating its population against the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly because its former leader claimed that the country had been infected with COVID- 19 was defeated.
The vaccines were received at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial capital, by Secretary of State Liberta Mulamula and US Ambassador to Tanzania, Donald Wright.
Magufuli, 61, was among the world’s foremost skeptics about COVID-19. Although the official cause of his death was stated to be cardiac arrest, Magufuli’s critics believe that he died of COVID-19.
Magufuli’s deputy, Samai Suluhu Hassan, took over as president in line with the country’s constitution and became the first female president in Tanzania.
Hassan has reversed Tanzania’s practice of denying the spread of COVID-19 in the East African country.
