US defender Mark McKenzie targeted online racial abuse

United States defender Mark McKenzie has been subjected to racial abuse on social media after his team’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League Final

McKenzie, who is Black, wrote on her Instagram Stories late Monday, “The amount of racial abuse and personal attacks on myself and family from ‘supporters’ and ‘non-supporters’ just isn’t enough.”

The posting contained an instance of abuse.

22-year-old Mackenzie, who plays for Genk in Belgium, gave a giveaway on Sunday night that led to Jesu Corona’s goal for Mexico after only 63 seconds and the 119th minute handball whistle. Ethan Horvath then saved the win by saving a penalty.

McKenzie joined Genk from MLS’ Philadelphia Union in January.

Sunday’s match in Denver was halted nearly three minutes into second-half stoppage time due to discriminatory fan chants.
